You must’ve been thinking of starting a heavy metal band. If not, you might just be wanting to practice some fabulous drum combinations. When it comes to heavy metal music, you must undoubtedly have the right drum set. It would help you to set off in the right direction. Since heavy metal is more about quality sound, having a nice bass drum would be extremely helpful.

It would add the required depth to the overall tone. An excellent kick drum is useful in adding a rich distinction in the song’s cadence. You must not forget that the snare must have a great clarity and snap to move your soul. So, here are the best drum sets for heavy metal music:

1. Gammon Percussion Full Size Complete Drum Set

While Gammon also offers a junior starter kit, this is a fantastic choice for the experienced adult drummers. The set includes a bass drum, floor tom, snare drum, and two mounted toms. It has also been provided with cymbals, stool, stands, sticks, pedals, drum key, and other hardware.

It has everything you need in order to get started on an exciting drumming journey. This is a professional-sized set with a high black gloss finish. As it is long-lasting, you’ll get complete value for money with this drum set.

2. LAGRIMA Black Full Size 5 Piece Complete Drum Set

This would make for a great set if you want to ease into drumming. One of the best features of this set are that all the drums have real wood shells. Another exciting feature is that the drums have more of a glossy finish. Better elasticity and longer use is ensured with the double layer oil skin.

The stool can be adjusted to suit your height. The drums also have a good ringing chord. All the drums have been made with good-quality materials and are quite easy to assemble. Perhaps the only downside is that the cymbals are too tiny.

3. Pearl RS525SCC706 Roadshow 5 Piece Drum Set

From starting out to becoming an intermediate player, this drum set can be your great companion. You can also develop your career or play a few weekly gigs at the local bar with them. This 5-piece drum set with cymbals can be readily set up and is known for its durability.

The snare, bass drum, and toms have a 9-ply Poplar shell. This produces a powerful tone. You’ll have a drum throne included in the set along with chain-drive bass drum pedal. Also included are geared and locking stands.

All stands, including the drum throne have been dual-reinforced with double-braced legs. This drum set is definitely worth your money and is absolutely sturdy. The only disappointment is that no screws have been provided for hi-hat.

4. Yamaha Stage Custom Birch Standard Drum Kit

This is a wonderful drum set that produces great sounds. The birch drum shells have an air seal system. In terms of looks, it certainly has the elegance that makes it absolutely attractive. As expected, Yamaha lives up to its reputation for richness in instrumentation with this set as well.

It has a good mix of snares, tom drums, kicks, and more. With a compact design, the set can be easily carried to and from the venues. The only disadvantage is that heads need to be replaced.

Often called the pioneers of heavy metal music, Black Sabbath was a British rock band from Birmingham, England. The band had Ozzy Osbourne as the vocalist and Tony Iommi as the guitarist. Geezer Butler was the band’s bassist and Bill Ward played the drums. Formed in 1968, they tried the names Polka Tulk Blues and Earth before adopting the name Black Sabbath.

They created a distinct identity through their themes of occult and horror. This was made apparent in their down-tuned guitars and lyrics. Black Sabbath played an important role in defining the heavy metal genre with some immensely successful albums. Some of them were Black Sabbath, Paranoid, and Master of Reality.

Band Members of Black Sabbath

1. Ozzy Osbourne

He was the lead vocalist and had adopted the nickname ‘Prince of Darkness’. Born John Michael Osbourne on the 3rd of December 1948, he was called ‘Ozzy’ since his school days. When Geezer Butler formed his first band called ‘Rare Breed’ in 1967, he recruited Osbourne as the vocalist.

The band broke up after playing two shows. They came together along with Tony Iommi and Bill Ward to form Black Sabbath the following year. He was fired from Black Sabbath owing to his drug and alcohol problems in 1979. Later, he went on to have a successful career as a solo artist, songwriter, and television personality.

2. Tony Iommi

Born Anthony Frank Iommi, he was the co-founder and lead guitarist of Black Sabbath. He was also the band’s primary composer and the only continuous member for almost five decades. As a teenager, he had lost the tips of his middle and ring fingers of his right hand.

This happened due to an accident when he was working in a factory. Before forming Black Sabbath, he played in many blues and rock bands. It was after the formation of Black Sabbath that he rose to prominence.

He had detuned his guitar by the 1971 album ‘Master of Reality’. By lowering string tension he avoided causing pain to his fingertips. To match him, the band’s bassist Geezer Butler did the same. The band was among the first ones to detune and this technique became heavy metal’s mainstay.

3. Geezer Butler

He was the primary lyricist and bassist of Black Sabbath. Born Terence Michael Joseph Butler on the 17th of July 1949, he got the nickname ‘Geezer’ at school. Before Black Sabbath happened, he had formed the band ‘Rare Breed’ with Ozzy Osbourne as its lead vocalist.

It soon broke up, but they got together along with Tony Iommi and Bill Ward to form Black Sabbath. He played rhythm guitar during his days with Rare Breed, but moved on to bass later on. He is currently the bassist for a British-American hard rock band called ‘Deadland Ritual’.

4. Bill Ward

He was the drummer of Black Sabbath and also performed lead vocals on two of their songs. They were It’s Alright and Swinging the Chain. Born William Thomas Ward on the 5th of May 1948, he started playing drums as a child. At the time, he was greatly influenced by the jazz drummers Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, and Louie Bellson. He and Tony Iommi played in a band called ‘Mythology’ before the forming of Black Sabbath.

He left and joined the band several times. Throughout the band’s heyday, his drug and alcohol use had increased considerably. Today, he follows a healthy lifestyle after he adopted a vegan diet and gave up smoking, alcohol and drugs.

You probably know how most of the rock musicians are. Almost all of them look weird and also do some of the weirdest things. This is often rooted in the very nature of rock and its sub-genres. All the bands are mostly of a rebellious nature. They do not conform to the conventional rules laid down by the society. If you go back to the origins of rock music, you’ll see that it started in a big way in the 1960s.

This was the time when people, especially the younger generation, had started questioning the social rules and dogmas. Rock music became the symbol of rebelliousness and non-conformity. So, by now, you might’ve got a little background about rock music and rock stars. Now, let’s look at some of the weirdest things that the rock musicians have done:

1. Decapitating a bat?

Ozzy Osbourne is one of the most popular stars from the world of rock music. He is known for his crazy behavior, both in public and private. This ultimate ‘madman’ lived the kind of life that would’ve killed the strongest of men.

Scientists who got his blood tested discovered that decades of drug and alcohol intake had altered his DNA. They couldn’t believe that he lived this long with all the substance abuse. Once he bit off the head of a bat while performing on stage. He had no idea that the bat was real!

2. That sneaky act

The British actress Cleo Rocos mentioned something really unbelievable in her memoir. Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the rock band ‘Queen’, had once dressed Princess Diana in drag. He, with the help of Cleo, sneaked the princess into Royal Vauxhall Tavern, London’s iconic gay bar.

To make the princess unrecognizable, they made her wear an army jacket, a leather cap, and dark aviator sunglasses. Then, after enjoying a couple of drinks and having some fun, Princess Diana was dropped back home. No one at the palace ever knew about this.

3. Save me from The Predator!

Remember Slash, the lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses? Well, he’s been alright ever since he moved away from his drug abuse. However, there was a time when he used to buy lots of heroin and cocaine using his advance paycheck. Back in the early 1990s, he did something really weird while he was high on drugs.

He was convinced that a monster was chasing him with weapons. According to him, the monster looked like the alien from the movie, The Predator. He ran completely naked through a golf resort in Arizona. He even smashed a glass door and used a maid as shield before hiding behind a lawnmower!

4. An anti-aging act?

All members of ‘The Rolling Stones’ have some crazy stories to tell, which involve drugs and groupies. Among all such stories, nothing can beat what Keith Richards did. It became one of the most insane stories in the history of Rock ‘N’ Roll. He is the co-founder, guitarist, songwriter, and secondary vocalist of the band.

He had once admitted that he snorted and smoked his own father’s ashes! Now, people really wonder whether it was his formula for anti-aging. No one’s quite sure about it, but we all know that he’s still alive and kicking.

]]>
The credit for creating the heavy metal genre goes to none other than Black Sabbath. A paradigm shift in rock music was brought about by the success of the band’s first two albums. One had the band’s name as its title and the other was ‘Paranoid’.

It was after the success of these albums that the term ‘heavy metal’ entered the music vocabulary. It was described as a more thunderous and denser kind of rock music. The band exuded the key aspects of heavy metal aesthetic. Some of them were a dark and demonic subject matter, riff-based songs, and extreme volume.

Black Sabbath described themselves as a ‘heavy underground band’. It denoted the intensity of their music and the community of fans who were the first to discover them. This description has always stayed with them, even after selling over 75,000,000 albums worldwide.

They were inducted into the ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’ in 2006. However, they already had the eligibility for it way back in 1995. This stands testimony to the fact that they’ve always remained a misunderstood band in the history of rock.

How the band formed

The story of this band began in England with Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Ozzy Osbourne, and Bill Ward. In music, they found a way to escape their life of factory work. In 1968, these four musicians got together and formed a band, which they named ‘Earth’. At the time, they were heavily influenced by some of the top British blues bands.

In fact, the name ‘Earth’ was the shortened form of their ‘Earth Blues Company’. Everything changed for the band when Geezer Butler came up with a bizarre idea for a song. It was about a disturbing apparition that he believed he had witnessed one night. He had flirted with black arts for a brief period. Apparently he believed that the figure he had seen was real.

Osbourne provided lyrics for the song and it was composed by the band. They titled the song Black Sabbath after a 1963 horror film directed by Mario Bava. It received extremely encouraging reactions from the audiences. Upon seeing such unusual reactions, they knew they had stumbled upon something strong and unique.

Themes used by the band

As there was already another band named ‘Earth’, they were forced to change their band’s name. ‘Black Sabbath’ was the obvious choice, as the name was mysterious and thought-provoking. All members of the band liked The Beatles, but this band was their polar opposite.

Ozzy Osbourne was the vocalist and Ward played the drums. Butler was the bassist and main lyricist of the band, while Iommi served as the musical architect. Black Sabbath’s songs were based on varying themes. They were mostly on social chaos, war, the afterlife, conflict between good and evil, and the supernatural.

Many believed that they were devil worshipers or witchcraft practitioners. These were nothing but misconceptions as the lyrics of a song called After Forever paints a different picture. The lyrics of the song contains the line ‘God is the only way to love’.

The careers of many talented young musicians were launched by Ozzy Osbourne in the 1980s. Among them was Randy Rhoads, Osbourne’s classically-trained guitarist. Unfortunately, his musical journey was short-lived owing to his untimely death in a plane crash in 1982. After this incident, several guitarists played for Ozzy Osbourne in succession.

One of them was Brad Gillis who became immensely successful later on with the band Nigh Ranger. Among the others were Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde. Both of them achieved significant successes in their careers as guitarists. The drummers of Osbourne also had great successes after their short stint with him.

Although drummers are less discussed when talking about the successes of heavy metal bands, they never go unnoticed. There were some seasoned drummers who played for Osbourne, such as Tommy Aldridge and Carmine Appice. However, the band’s percussive presence grew stronger when Randy Castillo became their drummer.

He died at the age of 51, after succumbing to his cancer in 2002. Later, he became the subject of a documentary titled The Life, Blood, and Rhythm of Randy Castillo. It was directed by Wynn Ponder, a filmmaker based in the state of Kansas in the United States of America.

Life of Randy Castillo

The film follows the journey of Castillo from his early days, which were spent in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It then talks about Castillo’s time with an array of club bands and his move to Los Angeles. This was the city that took him to the world stage. The timing was also perfect, as it happened when rock music was at its zenith of glory.

Also shown in this documentary are the testimonials from bandmates, such as Mike Inez and Phil Soussan. It also includes testimonials from close friends, such as Slash, Lita Ford, and many others. Lita Ford has also provided narration in the documentary.

It is through all these testimonials that one learns more about how Castillo was, as an individual. The viewers are reminded of the fact that he was a rarity in the world of rock music. Randy Castillo was a gifted musician who maintained his calm during difficult situations. It is worth noting that his time was incredibly short in the spotlight.

Dancin’ on the Edge was his first major album and his last LP was New Tattoo with Motley Crue. Between these two albums, he gave some memorable performances as a band member of Ozzy Osbourne. He made significant contributions to their 1991 album No More Tears, which was a huge success commercially.

The transition

His bass drumming was top-notch and contributed immensely to his reputation as a consummate showman. What was not highlighted so much was his transition into the band, Motley Crue. It went into a decline commercially towards the end of the 20th century.

Despite this, the drummer’s spot in the band was a coveted one. It was held by the band’s co-founder, Tommy Lee, until 1999. It was no small feat for Randy Castillo to grab the spot and fill in so aptly. The only disappointment was that it was such a short-lived stint.

Final days

He was diagnosed with cancer when Motley Crue was preparing for a new tour in 2000. His plans to get to the stages across the world were put on hold. He persevered even though the treatment for his cancer had nearly killed him. Eventually, he was declared cancer free.

This turned out to be a short-lived victory as cancer returned. He had to undergo the round of treatments once again, but this time he didn’t survive. Even after so many years since his death, Castillo’s legacy has remained strong.

It’s always a great idea for beginners to learn different styles of drumming. It helps in their development as drummers and expands their horizons as musicians. At times, it also makes them get out of their comfort zones. When this is done they’ll be more open to experimenting with different drumming styles.

Each of the styles has its own kind of rhythm, which acts as a driving force. Experimenting with a genre that’s quite unfamiliar to them can truly enhance their knowledge. So, here are the most popular drumming styles that beginners must be familiar with:

1. Rock drumming

Rock music uses distorted electric guitars and simple melodic and harmonic structures. It is also characterized by straight 8th or 16th note grooves. They are are accompanied with strong backbeats played on the snare drum on 2nd and 4th beats. Initially, this genre attracted a younger audience owing to a sense of non-conformity and rebellion associated with it.

Drumming in rock music involves intense and loud drum grooves. Often big fills are used to make a statement. Some of the famous rock drummers include John Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Randy Castillo, and Ginger Baker.

2. Heavy metal drumming

Power, precision, and drum speed are the three pillars of heavy metal drumming. This is why the drum kits used in heavy metal are larger in size. Growling vocals, a loud and aggressive performance, and emphatic rhythms are the major characteristics of heavy metal music. They are complemented with a dense guitar, drum sound, and bass. Heavy metal music is credited for the origin of two main features of drumming.

They are the cymbal choke and the double bass drums. Drumming in heavy metal demands an extremely high amount of co-ordination, endurance, speed, and precision. It is, therefore, advisable for beginners to start slow and develop a proper technique. Some of the incredible drummers in heavy metal genre are Lars Ulrich, Chris Adler, and Mike Portnoy.

3. Jazz drumming

Jazz music has been heavily influenced by the blues music. In order to construct aesthetic and stylistic developments in jazz, blues served as a base. It all started in Dixieland, when the practice of playing drum sets in jazz was introduced.

Later, this genre evolved into jazz fusion and Latin-jazz in the later part of the 20th century. ‘Swing’ is the most important feature of jazz music and it is the triplet subdivision which gives its feel. Drumming in jazz requires a method of playing percussion that’s easily adaptable.

Earlier, the drummers in jazz heavily relied on military rudiments and beats. Today, there are new techniques and better musicianship in this genre. Among the most influential drummers in jazz are Kenny Clarke, Buddy Rich, Max Roach, and Elvin Jones.

4. Electronic drumming

In recent times, one would come across many different styles of electronic music. They include trance, techno, drum, house, bass, and several others. Each of these styles has a rhythm unique to it. Certain styles like drum and bass use ‘breakbeat rhythms’ while many others may use ‘four on the floor’ rhythms.

Generally, electronic music producers use drum machines or digital audio workstations (DAWs) to lay down their drum tracks. However, drummers are often called in live performances for their sound and presence. Mike Healy, Rob Chafin, and Matt Harris are some of the famous electronic drummers.

]]>
When Randy Castillo succumbed to his cancer and passed away in 2002, the world lost a great talent. He had spent a considerable amount of time being a drummer in Ozzy Osbourne’s band. Castillo was also a member of the band, Motley Crue, for some time. He was born on the 8th of December 1950 in Albuquerque. He was interested in music from an early age.

He was heavily inspired by the performance of The Beetles on the Ed Sullivan Show in the 1960s. After watching this show he began taking keen interest in playing drums. Castillo had played drums for many bands by his late teens. He recorded his first LP in 1980, when he was a member of a short-lived group called ‘Offenders’.

Association with Ozzy Osbourne

In 1981, he moved to Los Angeles to make it big in the world of rock. He shared his room with Tim Pierce, the future Rick Springfield guitarist, while he was in the city. During this time, he performed with several short-lived bands. When he had made a name for himself, he was hired by Lita Ford to play drums in 1984. At the time, she was working on her LP called Dancin’ on the Edge.

Owing to this association, he was introduced to Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee. They were the members of the band, Motley Crue, and were also the friends of Ozzy Osbourne. Upon learning that Osbourne was looking for a new drummer, they recommended Castillo. Thus began a long-term association between the two, which lasted for nearly a decade.

With Osborne, his first appearance was on the LP known as The Ultimate Sin. He stuck around with Osbourne’s band for a while and even participated in their concerts. After moving out of his association with Osbourne, Castillo did a handful of projects for some time. He drummed for several tribute LPs issued by the label, Cleopatra. Castillo even returned to Osbourne’s band for a brief period in 1995.

Worsening of Health

Four years later, he was chosen by the Motley Crue band to join their lineup for recording their eighth LP, New Tattoo. It was quite unfortunate that Castillo began experiencing pain after a show. He didn’t have much time to enjoy this new association.

When he was admitted to the hospital, the doctors discovered that he was suffering from a serious ulcer. His doctor told him that the cause of the ulcer was a contagious bacteria called h-pylori. Samantha Maloney was brought in by Motley Crue to fill in for Castillo as they embarked on their tour. While recuperating at the hospital following his ulcer surgery, Castillo’s health worsened.

Death

He initially ignored a small lump under his jaw but sought medical help again when it got bigger. He was stunned when told by the doctors that he was going to receive a cancer diagnosis. The lump was removed after surgery and he started getting radiation and chemotherapy.

The medical term for Castillo’s condition is Squamous Cell Carcinoma. If it is detected on time, this form of cancer is often treatable. After undergoing aggressive therapy, he believed that he had beaten his cancer. To everyone’s disappointment, it returned after some time and took his life on the 26th of March, 2002.

For many individuals who’ve witnessed the dawn and rise of heavy metal music, Ozzy Osbourne is a familiar name. He is undoubtedly among the most interesting characters who belonged to this genre of music. His performances with Black Sabbath is still adored by his fans. However, there were many of his solos that have a special place in the hearts of his admirers.

As a solo artist in the 80s, he looked like a ferocious and dark god of heavy metal. Everyone knows that they were all acts, yet they were quite convincing. It was during the television show called ‘The Osbournes’ that everyone came to understand the real Ozzy. His issues with drugs and alcohol surfaced in this show.

Fans began to wonder whether these things were all made up. He has utilized some of the best talents for his performances, and one of them was Randy Castillo. No wonder the legendary drummer stayed with his band for a decade. Here are some of the top songs of Ozzy Osbourne that have always mesmerized his fans:

1. Perry Mason

This song begins in an amazing way and gets better as it progresses. The vocal rhythm of Ozzy on this track is worth listening to. It was released on the album, ‘Ozzmosis’, in 1995. He incorporates a brilliant swing feel on the verse. The writing of John Purdell proved to be a secret weapon in this song.

Purdell had worked with Alice Cooper, Dream Theater, Foreigner, and many other bands before his death. Upon the release of Ozzmosis, many critics put down the album. Despite their criticism, the album was appreciated by fans and Perry Mason became the shining star of the album.

Drummers are the heart of all music bands, especially those in the hard rock and heavy metal genres. However, the frontmen and guitarists are the ones that often steal the show. At times, many of the drummers were the reason behind the huge successes that these bands enjoyed. Here we’ve compiled a list of some legendary drummers, who helped define hard rock and heavy metal music.

1. John Bonham

He is considered the backbone of the hard rock band Led Zeppelin. This band had revolutionized hard rock in the late 1960s. John Bonham is known for his use of ‘triplets’ within the rhythm in a faster and harder format. Perhaps his lasting legacy is his performance on Moby Dick

He was arguably the most influential drummers in the history of rock music. Popularly known as ‘Bonzo’, he will always be remembered for his solos, which were mostly lengthy and improvisational.

2. Neil Peart

Many believe that the complex music of the prog-rock giant called Rush is something that only Neil could play. He was a perfectionist who was always willing to learn. The most impressive aspect of Peart’s performance on drums is that he made it look quite easy.

He was a great showman who was technically sound and wonderfully creative, yet was always humble about his talent. Among the songs of Rush that stand testimony to Peart’s exceptional brilliance are La Villa Strangiato and YYZ

3. Randy Castillo

He decided to become a drummer after getting inspired by the performance of ‘The Beatles’ on a television show. Randy Castillo’s first rock band was ‘The Wumblies’. Tommy Lee, the founding member of the heavy metal band, Motley Crue, introduced Castillo to Ozzy Osbourne.

At the time, Ozzy was looking for a new drummer and Castillo  was hired without an audition a couple of months later. He ended up staying with Ozzy and his band for 10 years. He died from cancer in 2002. His life and times were explored in a documentary film called The Life, Blood and Rhythm of Randy Castillo.

4. Keith Moon

He was an influential drummer who was a member of the rock band, The Who. Nicknamed ‘Moon the Loon’, his best performances can be seen in The Real Me and The Kids are Alright. Keith Moon was one of the most entertaining characters in the history of rock, who played fast and hard.

He had a style of his own and seemed out of control at times. Moon’s furious drumming and on-stage antics will forever be remembered by fans of ‘The Who’.

5. Ginger Baker

He worked with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce as a member of their rock band, Cream. In a little more than two years, he became one of the most beloved rock drummers of all time. Ginger Baker’s most memorable performances are in groundbreaking hits like Wheels of Fire, Fresh Cream, Goodbye, and Disraeli Gears

His dynamics and finesse couldn’t be missed as he swung his way through blues and psychedelic-rock. With Toad, he gave the world of rock the drum solo. As a true pioneer, he redefined the drum kit’s place in music.
